Vitamin C plays a key role in supporting a healthy immune system1-4. Its importance in immunity is further supported by studies with vitamin C supplements, suggesting that it may reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms in some people.7 Vitamin C is thought to have an anti-histamine effect,1,4,5 and may support lung function.1,6 Furthermore, the absorption of iron found in plant-based foods may increase when consumed with vitamin C.1-4

Vitamin C is an antioxidant found in food and is necessary for collagen formation, an essential component of skin, bones, gums, and cartilage.1-4  Vitamin C also helps regenerate vitamin E into its antioxidant form providing further protection against damage.1,3

Fruits and vegetables supply about 90 percent of the vitamin C in the diets of the general population.3 Oranges and 100% orange juice are one of the richest dietary sources of vitamin C8 and citrus juices are one of the most cost-effective ways to get vitamin C in the diet.16 Grapefruit juice, kale, kiwi, and cauliflower also have significant amounts of vitamin C.

Between 1999 and 2018, vitamin C consumption dropped by 23 percent on average and this was largely driven by a 48 percent decline in 100% fruit juice consumption over that same time period.15 An 8-ounce glass of 100% orange juice is an excellent source of vitamin C, containing more than 100% of the recommended Daily Value.*

1. Qué es Redoxc 500 mg comprimidos masticables y para qué se utiliza

E ste medicamento contiene ácido ascórbico (vitamina C), que pertenece al grupo de vitaminas hidrosolubles. Esta vitamina es antioxidante y es esencial, entre otras funciones, para la formación del colágeno (proteína muy abundante en la piel y en los huesos). Es fundamental para la cicatrización y favorece las defensas del organismo.

Este medicamento está indicado en el tratamiento de estados carenciales de vitamina C, en adultos y adolescentes a partir de 14 años.

Aunque la dieta habitual es rica en ácido ascórbico, especialmente las frutas y verduras frescas, en algunos casos puede ser necesario un aporte suplementario de vitamina C. .

2. Qué necesita saber antes de empezar a tomar Redoxc 500 mg comprimidos masticables

No tome Redoxc:

-  Si es alérgico al ácido ascórbico o a cualquiera de los demás componentes de este medicamento (incluidos en la sección 6).

- Si padece nefrolitiasis o historia de nefrolitiasis (formación de piedras en los riñones)

-  Si padece hiperoxaluria (aumento de la tasa de ácido oxálico en la orina)

-

-  Si padece enfermedad del riñón grave.

-  Si padece hemocromatosis (presencia de demasiado hierro en el cuerpo)

Advertencias y precauciones

Consulte a su médico o farmacéutico antes de empezar a tomar Redoxc.

- Este medicamento no debe administrarse en dosis más altas o durante una mayor duración que la recomendada en la sección 3. Cómo usar Redoxc 500 mg comprimidos masticables , ya que el uso durante largo tiempo de grandes dosis puede ser perjudicial.

-  Si padece alguna enfermedad del riñón, no debe tomar dosis elevadas de ácido ascórbico porque podrían dañarle.

-  Si padece o ha padecido cálculos (piedras en el riñón) o gota (depósitos de ácido úrico en las articulaciones, sobre todo en los pies) debe tener precaución porque podrían producirse.

- Si presenta deficiencia de glucosa-6-fosfato-deshidrogenasa (alteración hereditaria del metabolismo de los glóbulos rojos), puede producirse hemólisis (destrucción de glóbulos rojos).

-  Los pacientes con anemia de células falciformes (enfermedad hereditaria que afecta a la forma de los glóbulos rojos) deben tener precaución, porque podrían padecer una crisis.

-  Si está en tratamiento con  anticoagulantes vea el apartado Toma de Redoxc con otros medicamentos.

-   Si padece alguna afección con sobrecargas de hierro (elevados niveles de hierro en sangre), el consumo de este medicamento podría perjudicarle.

-   Interferencias con pruebas analíticas : Si le van a hacer alguna prueba diagnóstica (incluidos análisis de sangre, orina, etc.…) comunique al médico que está utilizando este medicamento, ya que puede alterar los resultados. Podría afectar a algunas pruebas de glucosa o paracetamol en orina, sangre oculta en heces, etc.

Niños

No administrar este medicamento a menores de 14 años debido a la dosis de vitamina C de cada comprimido.

Toma de Redoxc con otros medicamentos

Informe a su médico o farmacéutico si está utilizando, ha utilizado recientemente o podría tener que utilizar cualquier otro medicamento.

El ácido ascórbico podría interaccionar con los siguientes medicamentos:

- Antiácidos que contengan aluminio (para el tratamiento de la acidez de estómago).

Este medicamento puede ser perjudicial para personas con fenilcetonuria porque contiene aspartamo que es fuente de fenilalanina.

Este medicamento contiene sorbitol. Si su médico le ha indicado que padece una intolerancia a ciertos azúcares, consulte con él antes de tomar este medicamento.

3. Cómo usar Redoxc 500 mg comprimidos masticables

Siga exactamente las instrucciones de administración del medicamento contenidas en este prospecto o las indicadas por su médico o farmacéutico. En caso de duda, pregunte a su médico o farmacéutico.

La dosis recomendada es:

Adultos y adolescentes mayores de 14 años : 1 comprimido masticable, una vez al día. Se aconseja tomar el comprimido por la mañana.

En caso de deficiencia importante de vitamina C, como por ejemplo, en casos de resfriados muy repetidos, se podrían tomar 2 comprimidos al día (1.000 mg de Vitamina C), con supervisión médica.

La duración del tratamiento en general no debe superar 10 días continuados.

Si los síntomas no mejoran o empeoran después de 7 días de tratamiento, debe consultar al médico.

Vía oral.

Los comprimidos se deben masticar antes de tragarlos.

Uso en niños y adolescentes

Redoxc 500 mg comprimidos masticables no está recomendado para uso en menores de 14 años debido a la dosis que contiene.

Si toma más Redoxc del que debe

4. Posibles efectos adversos

Al igual que todos los medicamentos, Redoxc puede producir efectos adversos aunque no todas las personas los sufran.

Durante el periodo de utilización del principio activo de este medicamento, se han notificado las siguientes reacciones adversas, especialmente en dosis mayores a las recomendadas, cuya frecuencia no se ha podido establecer con exactitud:

- Trastornos digestivos como diarrea, náuseas, vómitos, dolor abdominal y gastrointestinal, ardor de estómago, espasmo abdominal (calambres abdominales) y flatulencia (gases); en raras ocasiones esofagitis (inflamación del esófago) y obstrucción en el intestino.

- Se han informado de reacciones de hipersensibilidad con manifestaciones de laboratorio y clínicas, incluyendo síndrome de asma alérgico, reacciones de leve a moderadas que podrían afectar a la piel, aparato respiratorio, tracto digestivo y sistema cardiovascular, incluyendo síntomas como erupción, urticaria (afección rojiza con picor), edema alérgico y angioedema, picor, dificultad cardio-respiratoria, reacciones graves, incluyendo shock anafiláctico (reacción alérgica grave generalizada).

5. Conservación de Redoxc 500 mg comprimidos masticables

No conservar a temperatura superior a 25º C. Mantener el envase debidamente cerrado.

Mantener este medicamento fuera de la vista y del alcance de los niños.

No utilice este medicamento después de la fecha de caducidad que aparece en el envase después de CAD. La fecha de caducidad es el último día del mes que se indica.

Los medicamentos no se deben tirar por los desagües ni a la basura. Deposite los envases y los medicamentos que no necesita en el Punto Sigre de la farmacia.     As millennial women, most of us have never had to worry too much about how and where, if necessary, we would get an abortion.

    Terminations have been legal in the UK since the late sixties and in America since Roe v. Wade in 1973 giving us the sense that it is our ineradicable right.

    But now, for America at least, it seems that women must face the reality the right to an abortion is very much under threat. Last month President Trump passed a law that reinstated the global gag rule, depriving millions of vulnerable women worldwide from accessing reproductive health services.

    For women in countries where healthcare comes at a cost, monetary or otherwise, the price of an abortion is often just too steep driving many who are desperate to wade into the treacherous waters of online medical advice, a world awash with pseudo-scientific DIY remedies.

    In 2015, there were over 700,000 Google searches in the US that asked how to self-induce an abortion. Tens of thousands of those searches specified abortion using vitamin C or other herbs.

    Herbal abortions have been around for centuries and, as a pamphlet from 1981 shows, vitamin C has been a noted abortifacient for decades. But it is only with the rise of the internet that the method has really gained traction.

    The immediacy of the internet provides women with a wealth of options at breakneck speed: 'Vitamin C abortion' returns around 667,000 search results in 0.78 seconds. It's easier and quicker to ask Google or Reddit or even Twitter for anecdotal medical advice rather than to schedule an appointment with your doctor.

    This, teamed with the fact that the stigma of abortion is still so deep-rooted that even doctors are afraid to train as abortion specialists, makes the internet, for some, a safe space to get abortion advice quickly and without judgement.

    This vast number of Google searches in the US speak for themselves. However, restrictions on reproductive rights apply closer to home, too. Abortion in Ireland is illegal unless the life of the mother is at risk. So strict are their laws that in 2014, a 21-year-old woman in Northern Ireland who took abortion tablets bought online, received a suspended prison sentence after her housemates reported her to the police.

    The Isle of Man, although less strict than Ireland, has laws with a number of restrictions that make the process difficult, and there are no organisations on the Isle of Man that can help to facilitate abortions.

    Though a clinical abortion in the UK is legal, self-aborting is not. Barring Ireland, the UK has one of the harshest punishments for self-induced abortion than any other country in Europe, which, in extreme cases can lead to life imprisonment.

    New data provided by BPAS from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency shows that there has been a huge shift in the number of women in England, Wales and Scotland looking to procure abortion pills, jumping from just 5 pills in 2013 to 275 in 2016. Last year, 645 abortion pills were seized on their way to UK addresses.

    This is where the ascorbic acid comes in. Women are able to  get their hands on high doses of it. One blog claims that 6000mg of vitamin C each day for three days is sufficient. Standard tablets can contain anywhere between 200-1000mg of vitamin C.

    Others suggest parsley tea or insertion of organic parsley directly into the vagina as a pessary.

    On one site, Sister Zeus, the author offers the disclaimer that the information provided is 'not intended as a guide,' but goes on to provide step-by-step instructions on how to use herbs and vitamin C to induce an abortion, and writes copious analyses that are riddled with fallacies and factual blind spots. But medical experts strongly advise against following the advice of such sites and blogs which pose  serious health threats.

    The appeal of vitamin C over other herbs might be that, whilst no one really knows the effects of large amounts of ascorbic acid on the body, it is considered generally less harmful than herbs like Pennyroyal, which in some cases has caused death. A 1970s study in a Russian scientific journal, considered the first and only real study of vitamin C as an abortifacient, concluded that the high levels of vitamin C stimulated the release of oestrogen, triggering a miscarriage, but did not have any harmful side effects short term.

    But there are plenty of horror stories from women who have tried such techniques with devestating effects including incomplete abortions requiring urgent medical care.

    Sadly such accounts just illustrate the desperate lengths many women will go to when their rights to safe abortions is restricted. It is naïve to think that limiting a woman's access to clinical abortions means that there will be fewer abortions. Simplistically banning abortion doesn't stop desperate women from seeking them out and getting them. It just makes the experience more expensive, more dangerous,  and perhaps worst of all, more lonely.

    • Birth to 6 months: 4 milligrams (mg)/day
    • 1 to 12 months: 5 mg/day
    • 1 to 3 years: 6mg/day
    • 4 to 8 years: 7mg/day
    • 9 to 13 years: 11mg/day
    • 14+ years, including adults and seniors: 15mg/day

    A person's age, gender and health conditions can help determine their recommended daily dose of vitamin E. Always consult a healthcare professional before altering your intake of vitamin E from the recommended daily dosage.

    Taking Vitamin E Supplements

    If it becomes necessary, such as if you become deficient in vitamin E, your doctor may advise you to start taking vitamin E supplements.     Also-called: Water | What-it-does: solvent

    Good old water, aka H2O. The most common skincare ingredient of all. You can usually find it right in the very first spot of the ingredient list, meaning it's the biggest thing out of all the stuff that makes up the product.

    It's mainly a solvent for ingredients that do not like to dissolve in oils but rather in water.

    Once inside the skin, it hydrates, but not from the outside - putting pure water on the skin (hello long baths!) is drying.

    One more thing: the water used in cosmetics is purified and deionized (it means that almost all of the mineral ions inside it is removed). Like this, the products can stay more stable over time.

    • Works best between a concentration of 5-20%
    • Boosts the skin's own collagen production
    • Fades pigmentation and brown spots
    • If used under sunscreen it boosts its UV protection
    • Extremely unstable and oxidizes very easily in presence of light or air
    • Stable in solutions with water only if pH is less than 3.5 or in waterless formulations

    A form of skincare superstar, vitamin C. If you do not know why vitamin C is such a big deal in skincare, we have a really detailed, geeky description that's good to read. :)

    So now you know that because pure vitamin C is such a diva (very unstable and hard to formulate) the cosmetic industry is trying to come up with some derivatives that have the badass anti-aging properties of vitamin C (antioxidant protection + collagen boosting + fading hyperpigmentation) but without the disadvantages. This is a hard task, and there is not yet a derivative that is really proven to be better in every aspect, but Ascorbyl Glucoside is one of the best options when it comes to vitamin C derivatives. Let's see why:

    First, it's really stable and easy to formulate,so the problems that come with pure vitamin C are solved here.

    Second, in vitro (meaning made in the lab, not on real humans) studies show that ascorbyl glucoside can penetrate the skin. This is kind of important for an anti-aging ingredient to do the job, so this is good news, though in-vivo (made on real humans) studies are still needed.

    Third, in-vitro studies show that after ascorbyl glucoside is absorbed into the skin it is converted to pure vitamin C (though the rate of conversion is still a question mark). It alsoshows all the three anti-aging benefits (antioxidant protection + collagen boosting + fading hyperpigmentation) that pure vitamin C does.

    Bottom line: ascorbyl glucoside is one of the best and most promising vitamin C derivatives that shows similar benefits to that of pure vitamin C, but it's less proven (in vivo vs. in vitro studies) and the extent of the benefits are also not the same.

    Also-called: Ginkgo Biloba Extract

    It's pretty much the current IT-preservative. It's safe and gentle, but even more importantly, it's not a feared-by-everyone-mostly-without-scientific-reason paraben.

    It's not something new: it was introduced around 1950 and today it can be used up to 1% worldwide. It can be found in nature - in green tea - but the version used in cosmetics is synthetic.

    Other than having a good safety profile and being quite gentle to the skin it has some other advantages too. It can be used in many types of formulations as it has great thermal stability (can be heated up to 85°C) and works on a wide range of pH levels (ph 3-10).

    It's often used together with ethylhexylglycerin as it nicely improves the preservative activity of phenoxyethanol.

    Simply alcohol refers to ethanol and it's a pretty controversial ingredient. It has many instant benefits: it's a great solvent, penetration enhancer, creates cosmetically elegant, light formulas, great astringent and antimicrobial. No wonder it's popular in toners and oily skin formulas.

    The downside is that it can be very drying if it's in the first few ingredients on an ingredient list.

    Some experts even think that regular exposure to alcohol damages skin barrier and causes inflammation though it's a debated opinion.     • A natural moisturizer that's also in our skin
    • A super common, safe, effective and cheap molecule used for more than 50 years
    • Not only a simple moisturizer but knows much more: keeps the skin lipids between our skin cells in a healthy (liquid crystal) state, protects against irritation, helps to restore barrier
    • Effective from as low as 3% with even more benefits at higher concentrations up to 20-40% (around 10% is a good usability-effectiveness sweet spot)
    • High-glycerin moisturizers are awesome for treating severely dry skin

    Ferulic Acid (FA) is a goodie that can be found naturally in plant cell walls. There is a lot of it especially in the bran of grasses such as rice, wheat and oats.

    FA - whose main job is to be an antioxidant - owes its fame to a 2005 research that discovered that adding in 0.5% FA to a 15% Vitamin C + 1% Vitamin E solution not only stabilizes the highly unstable, divaish Vit C, but it also doubles the photoprotection abilities of the formula.

    Couple of other studies show that FA just by itself is also a nice addition to cosmetic formulations: it can penetrate the skin (which is kind of important to do the job) and it has protecting properties against UV caused skin damage.

    So if you spot it on the ingredient list be happy about it. :)

    Also-called: lye | What-it-does: buffering

    The unfancy name for it is lye. It's a solid white stuff that's very alkaline and used in small amounts to adjust the pH of the product and make it just right.

    For example, in case of AHA or BHA exfoliants, the right pH is super-duper important, and pH adjusters like sodium hydroxide are needed.

    BTW, lye is not something new. It was already used by ancient Egyptians to help oil and fat magically turn into something else. Can you guess what? Yes, it's soap. It still often shows up in the ingredient list of soaps and other cleansers.

    Sodium hydroxide in itself is a potent skin irritant, but once it's reacted (as it is usually in skin care products, like exfoliants) it is totally harmless.
